I just got one at the thrift store and wondered the same thing. You just pour the water into the top. But there is a latch on the top of the iron and the whole clear section comes out from the iron, then I just put it under the tap and filled it up. The hole doesn't look big enough to put water in, but it worked.
I was just wondering how old of an iron it is. Looks like it may be vintage.
