Your best approach is towards the rubbish bin and a shop for a new iron - they design and make them to be virtually impossible to repair these days - don't want joe public getting inside and electrocuting themselves - it's a safety thing - I have given up even trying to repair our broken irons. Two year's life is typical so don't spend silly money on the new one.
