Hanging up on xp screen?

My computer will not go further than the xp screen,it just hangs up.Tried to boot up with windows xp disc with no joy.It is a dell pc.
Can anybody help please.

When you say it doesnt load into the windows xp disc, can you be a bit more specific? The reason I ask is because it may simply be the boot options in the BIOS that you need to set. Double-check the settings in the BIOS for boot options/priority and make sure it is set to CDROM or equivalent. Also, is the windows xp disc a recovery cd provided by Dell, or one that is a fresh unedited version?

Try using recovery console. If you have the XP disk you boot from the disk and install will start with setup. See MS paper on using recovery console or check here

have you installed any new progs recently. as the pc is booting up press f8 and you can either try - sart from last good know configuration or start in safe mode and remove any bad progs
