Exploding noise?

I have a candy cic60 condenser drier. Every so often a loud exploding noise comes from it. I have opened it up and found that the anti jamming filter/suppressor at the rear has black soot/smoke over it. what could the problem be and is it safe to keep using it. it stills works

If the filter has stopped working would the machine still work. And Im more concerned about the exploding noise than the filter,
