hold down the 'Fn' button along with the right or left arrows, right makes it lighter & left makes it darker.

Sounds like the screen inverter board is on the way out...common problem with laptops..inverters for all brands of laptops can be had cheaply on ebay...once you have the board take it to a repair shop...should not be too costly to fix.
