How can I stop a recording thay has begun?

I have a Panasonic Video Recorder NV-FJ710B.When I try to stop a recording that has begun, I highlight the recording & press 'cancel'. The message which comes up is' Put it into STOP mode first'.
There is no button called the STOP button & I do not know how to do this. I would be very grateful if anybody could help me. PLEASE.

if it is the remote I found on their website then the cluster of four oval buttons in the centre of the control the bottom of the two middle ones has a square and small arrow below that's the stop button.
To download the user manual go to their site.
www.panasonic.co.uk click on support then on the left of the page click Downloads on next page
1. insert the model number
2. select from list AV products
3. select video cassette recorder
4.skip or search for number from list
5. select user instructions. it's a pdf which you can save top status line left side right side of printer icon is square disc icon save it to your hard drive.
