Peugeot 406 2.0 diesel. Can't select gears?

My 2002 Peugeot 406 estate 2.0 diesel, will not allow me to select gears. If I start the car in gear, it tries to move foreward.
I can select gears with the engine off. It happened suddenly, the clutch change was noisy before the problem happened.

time for a new clutch or possibly new dual mass flywheel if it has one. if it was making chirpy noises when car switched off then flywheel probably broke up...=....expensive.
