VW Golf 1.8 Auto Starts Then stops?

The car starts then then stops. This can happen once or three or four times in row. happens when hot or cold. whith the throttle depresed it start to rev then cuts out. has been happening on and of over the last 12 months. could it be the crank sensor? M reg thank you in advance.

A friend has just had the same fault and it was to do with the factory fitted immobiliser. A magnetic ring is housed in the ignition barrel and "talks" to the ignition key. If the key or ring is faulty you will get these symptoms. Best to get an auto electrician to have a look.

There is a forum topic on Honestjohn.co.uk that might cover the same problem. They said it was a faulty temperature sensor telling the ecu that the engine was too hot and the ecu cuts the fuel. Quite common with VWs apparently.
