Temperature gauge works intermittently on my 02 ZAFIRA?

The temp gauge on my 02 Zafira will sometimes work but needle will then drop back. Have changed the sender unit - but still having same problem, gauge will sometimes work but always drops back. Am concerned as I would not know if engine is over-heating. Any advice please?
