How do I sharpen a chain saw?

Can anyone give me some tips? - Is it best to get a file out at home or take it to a dealer? - I've got a Ryobi and a Stihl Chainsaw. Is there a handy web-site to give tips on DIY filing?

Always sharpen by hand, do not let dealers with electric machines do it, they will get the cutters too hot and case harden them, it will loose its edge very quickly and you will not be able to sharpen it with a file because it is so hard, a simple roller gauge is the way too go, Husqvarna do a simple roller gauge kit.

you can buy a chain shrpening gadget for about £15 or you could get it sharpened professionally for about £7 -- but I suggest just buy a new chain for about £20

I bought a sharpening kit - guides and files - from a DIY store. Relatively easy to use.
