my escort van 1.8d started first time but the battery light stayed on ?

1.8d escort van started first time the battery light did not go out i turned engine of and tryed to start it again it would not start when i turned the key every thing goes of engine does not do anything

May need an alternator,charge battery,get van started and check with voltmeter your charging rate,should be around 14 volts
