How do you reprogram or replace a key fob battery in a 2008 525XI?

My key will not remotely open or lock the doors. Is this a battery issue and if so can I replace the battery or will I have to go to the dealer and get a new key for for around $200? I have a spare key that I have not tried yet. Help please.
