The O2 or Lamda sensor constantly monitors the exhaust of a vehicle which it then passes to the the Engine Managment System.
I don't know what you mean by 'defeat it'. Has some one told you that it is broken and needs replacing? When they pack up they need to be replaced but they are not cheap.
