i have tried all the above re switching the thermos back on with a pin head but there is still no hot air and the notice at the front of the machine (hotpoint aquarius ctd00) calls to 'empty water' - but there's no water in the collection unit at base of machine.

Perhaps i should just replace the thermostats?
the coils are definately not hot
