Tailgate strut repair?

Does anyone know how to regas a vehicle tailgate strut? My car is 38 years old & new ones aren't available,my eBay searches have drawn a blank & i'm fed up of getting my head bashed everytime i try to keep the tailgate open :(

could you not match them up with a pair from scrapyard,providing ball ends are same size and if a bit shorter in length may stop you from bashing your head!
