2001 renault scenic drivers elec window?

We live in France and have a UK renault scenic with us. Last week the electric window failed when it was being asked to close using the switch inside - terrible grinding noise but no response. Managed to pull the window up to within 1cm but have a concern it may just disappear. Renault quoted today 340 euros to repair it but I'm yet to see the quote to know exactly what is needed. Is there an age limit on Renault contributing to this problem or is it likely to just be age? Any ideas appreciated.

sounds like one of the cables has snapped, the noise you hear is the loose cable rubbing on the moving winder drum, it's a fiddly job to replace these cables a kit is around £40 from UK. Are there any good scrap yards over there? just rip off the door card & plastic sheet, make sure you've got a goodun, un-plug elec. connections & undo the 10mm bolts that hold the motor & frame inside the door, un-clip the glass (position glass nearly at bottom is better) & wedge it out of way, remove complete.
