How can I fix my DVD/CD rw drive 2?

OK I can get the PC to boot from the d: drive and if I start the PC with a disc in it I can run it. But If I boot up with the drive empty and then put a cd or dvd in the drive it detects that it is either one or the other but when you click to open it nothing is there. CONFUSED!!!!!
