My 2001 VW Golf GTI is running rich, new Lambda sensor?

My 2001 VW Golf GTI is running rich and only doing 20 miles to the gallon. The engine light is on and the smell of fuel burning is very strong... do i need a new a new Lambda Sensor and if so can i do it myself?

You will need to plug a fault code reader in to the diagnostic socket to give you a clue to what is at fault. Any other way would just be guessing,& buying random parts could work out more expensive in the long run.
