Idles at 1500 rpm and still dies after a couple minutes?

My son has a 1991 Kawasaki Ninja ZX1100. When he drives it, to keep it running smoothly he needs to keep the idle around 1500 rpm. but if he lets it sit at even that idle, it sputters and kills after a couple minutes. What would cause it to kill at that high of an idle?
