Astra 1.6 ls 1999 temperature guage not working?

Hi, just bought a Astra 1.6 LS 8v 1999. The temperature guage is not working and seems to be very heavy on petrol,put £25 and only got 70 miles out of it, surely should do more miles than this. Please help anyone. Also seems to be making a tapping noise from engine, any ideas

glad to help, the heat sensors are a common problem but easy to fix, i was not kidding about the tappets tho...also if your getting poor fuel economy changing things like the air filter might (would prob) help a lot and is cheap and easy..good to meet another 69er :-)

Thanks, phoned car sales where I bought it, says he will have a look at it next week for me, says it sounds like the heat sensor.

temp will prob be the sensor thats mounted in the engine, fairly cheap and easy to replace. The tapping noises are prob from the....tappets :-) not a very big job for someone who know what to do and may help fuel, sounds like u need it serviced.
