I cannot copy music to my CDRW?

I use Windows 2000 pro with a Pent. III processor. I was able to burn CD's in the past using Nero 5 software (which was bundled with my CDRW when I purchased it); this program was inadvertently removed from my computer and after I reinstalled it I can no longer burn CDs. I updated the drivers for Nero. I also have iTunes and Windows Media Player on my system and I am cannot burn a CD with these programs either. To complicate things further, I recently had to deal with a virus and reinstalled Windows 2000 pro. I have since tried to burn a CD with Nero, iTunes and Windows Media, still with no success. I replaced the ribbon cable to the CDRW and checked to see if it can read a CD, which it can. When I attempt to burn a CD, it always gets so far and then I get a message saying that the burning process was aborted due to an unknown error. Any suggestions? Thanks to anyone who can take the time to send some advice my way.
