How do I free a stuck handbreak cable adjuster on a ford transit?

I have an L reg diesel Ford Transit 80 that has a stuck handbreak adjuster. I am told that this is a common problem and freeing the asdjuster is liable to break the said adjuster. Is there any way to un-stick the adjuster without causing damage?

Just replace the cable, once they are seized they are generally staying like that. You shouldn't really need to adjust the cable though as the self adjusters in the drums should do all the work for you. If the handbrake is poor check the drums, shoes and adjusters in the drums.
