computer can freeze on startup or may run for 10 mins or so then freeze. any idea why

Your computer may be overheating.

Chech your CPU fan. Make sure it spins correctly and that the heatsink is free of any dust.

Use clean, dry, compressed air from a can to blow the dust away.
