S reg. Transit 120 2.5 diesel smiley face?

can anyone help? van takes about 2 miles before the needle on the temp gauge is anywhere near the middle, found the thermostat housing but it doesnt look like it'll come apart, is it a sealed unit? or can i remove the 'stat for testing? many thanks in advance.

plastic housing on these and think it unscrews apart but can be tight to get moving and if not careful you can crack the housing so be wary when doing this,if any problems go to a scrappy for another housing
