smoking vectra 1.9 diesel?

my car bellows out black smoke when i accelerate and it loses power. Then after a cough and a splutter it goes like a rocket again but still smokey. It's as economical a 747. any ideas? I've changed the air and fuel filter.

put diesel redex in.it might clean the crap out of it.there might be a blockage in for system

you could try cleaning the egr valve,doesnt cost anything
