how do i fix the steam button on the rowenta expet model dg 980 iron?

The steam button on the iron is not working- I think it was over used and maybe broken.

hi, I work for Kiefer Appliance and we can repair the steam button on your iron. We can get the parts from Krups-the parent company for Rowenta.

The plastic tang on the blue trigger had broken off.

I fixed mine by disassembling it and gluing a steel rod in place of the plastic actuator tang.

The top blue cover on the handle lifts off, the latch tabs on the plastic are hidden. You may need to gently pry it off with a flat bladed screwdriver. You may cause some cosmetic damage, but it's worth it. The unit was clearly designed as a "throw away".

The faulty trigger mechanism is a design flaw, and simple to fix with some gorilla glue and a 3/4 inch piece of shank(smooth part) of a 3/32 inch drill bit.

You can't. You have to call Rowenta. They will send you a sheet so you can send it to their repair center and have it repaired. (This is only if you have bought it in the last 18 months - longer than that and you are SOL) Oh, and you have to pay for the shipping and since have to send the entire model, which isn't light - it's expensive. Best part, they act as though they're doing you a favor extending the warranty for 6 months on their defective machine you spent $250.00 on. Not the best customer service I've come across.
