Thanks Mike, you were spot on and i bought a new capacitor for £13.95.
I am particularly skint at the moment and i would have had to put the cost of an engineer on a credit card, so thanks again.

no brushses in that motor...if it hums but does not turn then it'll probably be the motor capacitor positioned just to the side of the motor with 4 wires going to it

Check the brushes in the motor, they are cheap and easy to replace.
