depending on the year of the vehicle, which you have not said the vehicle speed may be picked up on electronic sensors on the wheel hubs or it may be electronic drive from the gearbox. Is there a plug assembly on the output drive above the offside driveshaft where it goes into the gearbox if so then that is the drive for the speedo. Check the fuses to see if one has blown it may be the same fuse as the cigarette lighter socket.
