thread tangling?

was told the timing could be the problem how do i fix this

you did not specify machine type but a common rule is to check needle eye in relation with hook.remove bobbin case so you can see the hook point and needle clearly.turn hand wheel to start needle going upwards,from completely down to approx 5mm going up the needle eye should be close to hook point.if that is close you must check upper and lower tension.the old hands know how to be precise but as long as you get some tension on both you will be able to get a better idea where the problem is.always start with a new needle before attempting any repair.hope it help a little
