laptop won't charge?

Hello,

I have an HP laptop and my charger stopped working. I bought a universal charger, which came with many different types of adapters. I have found the one that fits the best and looks like my old one. It is called REV A.1. It turns on and works fine, but will not charge, so as soon as it comes out, the computer turns off abruptly. I know this can't be good for my computer. Is there a way to reset a computer to be set to a new adapter or something? Any help would be so appreciated.

I realy don't think that the charger have any problem, but that the battery need to be replaced.

ALL rechargeable batterys will eventualy fail and need to get replaced. An old battery can no longer hold the charge and exibit the problem you describe.
