Automatic gearbox not changing gear?

I have a 2002 2.2 Omega - I can pull away but the gearbox stays in first gear then the drive drops out. when the engine speed drops the box engages first gear again. The oil level is correct and the car has only done 54000 miles. Any ideas please?
