Are you sure that it's the F1 key that you need to use for that?
Normaly, F1 is used to summon the help, both in Windows AND most of the Linux distros. Using that key for other purpose is a sertain recipie for conflicts and problems to no end...
Maybe you also need to use another key, like Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Win (the one with a Windows logo) or a combination of 2 or 3 keys + F1...
