Transmission fault on A-Class semi-automatic ?

My A-Class 2007 Avantgarde started losing power as I was driving. Suddenly seemed to get itself stuck in 2nd gear, and jerky. Couldn't switch to manual while driving. When I stopped the car and turned it off, it did start in manual - but it defaulted to automatic once I reached 4th gear. Everything I read indicates I need a new gearbox for £5000! Does anyone have any other suggestions? Cheaper?

Hi Nicky, I work for Intaparts in Daventry Northamptonshire, i asked how much a replacement gearbox would cost you, and was told about £300-00 + VAT. plus delivery, or you could find a local scrapyard in your area. you should also be able to find a local mechanic in your area to fit it for you at a reasonable rate. and this should reduce the cost. i take it you went to a main dealer who quoted the £5000 you put in your question. the phone number for Intaparts is- 01327 310511 i hope this is help to you.
