i took the spray plate completely apart because it was leaking and cannot get it put together

I suspect you have a Mira Response head, it was not designed to be taken apart further than removing the plate with the holes in, if you have gone further than that, ie removed the screw in the middle, you now need a new handset part number 411.92, best place to try is www.showerspares.com
