gripper problem, lervia kh4000?

Hi, my sister got thread severely tangled in the bobbin and the bobbin holder in my lervia kh4000.

i disassembled what i now know to be the gripper but upon reassembly the machine refuses to sew because thread continues to get severely tangled up on the first few revolutions.

i checked the manual and it said NOT to touch the gripper but that was too little too late. I checked this site and hazel doughty asked the same question in 2010 but never received a reply that i could see online.

please, please, please could somebody help me - what can i do to fix this problem considering that the machine is out of warranty and i can't afford a shop repair?

thanks in advance.
