In the mean time you can find a space character on your screen and copy it by highlighting the space character and - with the control key held down - type C for copy.

Then with space in the paste buffer you just drop a space into whatever you're typing with Ctrl V for paste.

When my keys misbehave it's usually food debris - I take the key cap off (or the spacebar) and brush the rubbish away.
