the service light on my Renault megane came on while retuning from holiday but service not due for another 3.000 miles what can the problem be

Check your oil and your air filter. The service interval works on time and distance, so if a year comes up first it will tell you you need a service regardless of the mileage. Press and hold the sharp little pip under the dials on the dash. This will clear the service light.
