loud banging like stones being knocked around happening during cycle and worse during spin
no obvious loose items in machine that I can see

You may have sorted this by now, but I had similar problem and it was one of the the shock absorber struts that attach drum to bottom of the chassis coming adrift.
Tore out of its mounting. This leaves the drum free to swing about and hit sides of machine.
I bolted a steel strip along the chassis cross member and reattached the strut to it.
