Built in Sat Nav has a disk error showing - can this be repaired ? can yo service the unit to get it working? Or is it worth getting a after market replacement.

You can download sections of the map on Google Maps now. This is designed for data black spots. So you can download the area of the map you will be travelling in, before you start your journey.

If you have a smartphone remember there's always Google Maps.
If you don't want to rack up charges for mobile data, you could look at Navmii, which is free and keeps the maps on your phone
