do i have to buy a new tv, a horizontal white line on screen only?

when the tv is turned on sometimes it will start with a full picture but anyway after a short time all i have is a horizontal white line accross centre of screen. The sound is ok still. It is a Ferguson FTV28DFW5. We have moved to germany so the frequency is 50hZ which is correct for model description. Can the tv be repaired for reasonable cost or is is time for yet another purchase?

You have a problem called field collapse aka frame collapse. As "romko" said you may damage the vertical IC and you could burn the screen and end up with the screen showing this white line and the correct picture even after the fault is repaired.

you have bad solder joints in the vertical section ('Kalte Lötstelle in die Vertikal-Endstufe' in German!) This is fixable, but meanwhile DONT use the set as it will stress the vertical IC.take it to a tech. Your set uses a Thomson chassis, so it should be very straightforward for a tech to sort out. However, the Pal B/G standerd used in germany is different from Uk pal I - so you get no terestrial tv sound- check the onscreen menus to see if it's possible to alter this, or use a german digibox in a scart input,. Viel Glück !
