how do i adjust the timing on my Peugeot 306 1.4?

I have a 1996 1.4L Peugeot 306. I have noticed that when idling the engine 'pinks'. I suspect the engine timing needs adjustment. How is this done?

1st your engine wont pink when idling ... only when under load

the noise you may here are the tappets rattling try changing your engine oil & filter ..also check your valve clearances.

2nd your timing is set by the electronic controll unit and is not adjustable .
