my 98 dodge voyager.3.3 V6?

I was driving @ 55mph and all of a sudden, heard a metal crunching noise coming from outside of the engine compartment. pulled over, stopped and turned ignition off. towed the van to my friends place. Then would not start. sounded like a flat battery. So,changed battery, still getting a click, click sound.changed the starter motor, still nothing, took the serpentine belt off, incase the alternator, or the AC compressor had frozen, still the same old sound, click, click.have turned the water pump by hand-ok, the same with the alternator and ac compressor-ok,
Now I'm really stuck, funds running real low, so I cant take to a proper repair shop. please HELP ME!! I take care of my van. did not smell any overheating, or any burning smell, no knocks from engine (new factory engine, approx 3 years ago) What IS the problem????

Hi Dudley; You didn't say if your van was stick or auto shift, so this is just a guess. A broken flywheel flexplate or loose coverter bolts will make a noise such as you describe.Hmmm------ I'm thinking your van is automatic.Hmmmm---- A new engine was installed, right? Hmmmm----
