jez,
you can strip the starter motor off of the bike, and clean it thoroughly. you'll need wd40,phillips screw drivers, sand paper wet and dry is good about 400 to 600 grade paper or wirewool. but this tends to snag up and leaves fine strands that heat up when an electrical current passes through the solenoid. undo the screw onthe back of the solenoid and it will slide off. give the slider agood clean with the sand paper as well as the inside of the hole it came out of . i would subjest you strip the whole starter motor down and sand the magnets and armature and the copper run the brushes sit on. check the brushes too they should be over a centimetre long they're easy to replace and by them from you main dealers for peanuts. clean everything with a good squirt of wd40 and a paint brush. grease the bearing that the spiggott bangs against i,e the end that sits in the engine put it back the same way you took it apart rule of thumb really dude. just use commonsense and an imbosil could do it it's so easy. a good memory is all you need if it came off it goes back on simple. and it'll save you a small fortune.

good luck graeme
