does the cam belt breaking in a rover 200 214si damage the engine?

the cam belt has snapped in my rover 200 214si. is it likely that this has damage the engine or is it a safe engine?

Unfortunately, it's an interference fit engine: the quckest way to test for damage is to fit a new belt and see what happens on start up!!! I suspect that you will have a bent valve or two!
