Checked cable doesn't seem undersized or loose connection - shower worked fine while smell became apparent. Any idea what could have caused the short ?. No signs of condensation or leaking into the unit.

Any ideas - do you think it's repairable or a replacement job ?

could be a faulty component. but it should of tripped rcd
what size kw shower is it ? how longs it been installed ?
