The screen is black, and a red light flashes stand by/timer? I can't find the manual, and not sure if a setting is messed up, or if it is something more serious.

I am not 100% sure on this, but after doing a little research (as I'm having the same problem) I believe it's the power supply box. Not too sure exactly how complicated it is to fix, but from waht I've read, I'd recommend having someone come in and fix it for you, intead of attempting it on your own.
