how to tighten the spring on the rope starter?

craftsman tiller. i need to rewind the spring on the rope starter
after replacing the rope.

Before you put rope on you should have retighten the spring and held it in place with a pair of vice grips and installed the new rope and let it pull it back in the housing .......
