I can't figure out how to make the recoil spring back. is there a trick to winding the rope spool on the recoil spring or is a specialty tool needed?

If the catch tang on the coil spring is broken, then the pull rope will not recoil. re-bend the coil spring tang ,remove the knot on the pull handle and wind the rope around the spool. Place it back on the recoil spring and wind it a couple of times. Re-thread the rope through the hole and retie the knot through the pull handle.
