Ok... I'm no expert but in the absense of any answers I have stripped my dryer down this evening and discovered that there is a pump that pushed water condensed out of the damp air by the condenser at the bottom of the drier through a plastic tube to the bottle at the top. The pump had siezed because a plastic retainer for the impeller had come off. Don't yet know how or if I will repair... several flimsy seals on the way will now need reseating / replacing.
