my lap top's on wi fi and my desk top is wired in to the router how can i get them to swop files or is it possible or do i have to get a cable to link them?

Assuming that you have Windows XP SP2 - you don't say. Go to Start, Show all connections. On the left of the pop up you will see: "Set up a Home Network" or similar. Run that and then open individual folders by using the 'Share' option.
